Pick it up- ANYTIME! ANYWHERE!
A non-profit organization created in April 2012 to bring light to the negative impacts of marine litter, especially to our wildlife through public outreach, education, action, and advocacy.
Mission: Clean Beaches Inc is a non-profit organization based in Brevard FL USA. We are a scientifically based conservation group focusing on the topic of marine litter and plastics pollution. We perform regular cleanups with proper disposal, recycling, or repurpose. We quantitatively survey the plastics for scientific research and to provide evidence of this growing issue. In addition we provide educational outreach and awareness with the goal of turning awareness into action and promises into practices!
How did we get started? We were founded in the spring of 2012 after being inspired by the years of walking the local beaches of Brevard County during my undergraduate studies in marine biology at Florida Institute of Technology. I have always been fascinated with sea turtles coastal conservation and began to realize the horrible connection of sea turtles and other marine species to marine litter, especially plastics ingestion and entanglement.
I am focusing my graduate research on sea turtles, vision and plastics pollution. In particular, Brevard County beaches are home to some of the world's most important nesting sites for sea turtles. In addition, the Space Coast is home to the Indian River Lagoon- North America's most biodiverse estuary.
What is the good thing about litter? ANYBODY can help by getting out there and picking it up-- ANYTIME, ANYWHERE! It doesn't matter where you are, everything leads to the BIG BLUE! So the next time you go out on a stroll bring a bag with you to pick up a few pieces!
To provide a platform for environmental awareness, specifically marine litter. In addition, I hope this page is looked at as an educational resource page for teaching about marine litter and it's impacts.
Picking up litter @ the beach (& everywhere else) has become my addiction, as well as using it as an opportunity to educate those using the beach about our issues with marine litter. I have made my fascination with the ocean and the flora and fauna that live there into my career and have/will dedicate my life to studying and protecting it.
Educational outreach is an integral part of MCB and we achieve this through public awareness at a local, regional, and international level utilizing workshops, seminars, symposia, and other educational platforms all the way from school settings to social media!
