ABOUT MCB

A non-profit organization created in April 2012 to bring awareness to the negative impacts of marine litter through research, public outreach, education, action, and advocacy.

Mission: Clean Beaches Inc is a non-profit organization based in Brevard FL USA. We are a scientifically based conservation group focusing on the topic of marine litter and plastics pollution. We perform regular cleanups with proper disposal, recycling, or repurpose. We quantitatively survey the plastics for scientific research and to provide evidence of this growing issue.  In addition we have research projects focusing on the interactions of marine litter and marine life, inluding entanglement and ingestion studies. Educational outreach is an integral part of MCB with the goal of turning awareness into action and promises into practices!

ABOUT OUR FOUNDER

She has over a decade of experience working with marine turtles, coastal conservation and performing coastal field work. Current research projects focus on plastics ingestion, diet composition, and the physiological effects of plastics on marine species, particularly marine turtles. Nikia is the Executive Director and manages all research projects and outreach programs for MCB. She has served on the BOD of multiple local non profits here in Brevard county, specializing in conservation and wildlife. Currently, she serves on the BOD of Wild Florida Rescue as their Director of Education.

How did we get started?

The founder is a
sea turtle biologist!

IN HER WORDS...

MCB was created in the spring of 2012 after being inspired by the years of walking the local beaches of Brevard County. I was then working on my graduate studies in marine biology at Florida Institute of Technology. I was waiting to begin my own sea turtle research (actually on the retina of sea turtles), but the International CITES permits were taking a bit longer than expected. I started walking the beaches daily and began to realize the horrible connection of  sea turtles and other marine species to marine litter, especially plastics ingestion and entanglement.

What is the good thing about litter?!?!

You can help by getting out there and picking it up-- ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!
It doesn't matter where you are, everything leads to the BIG BLUE! So the next time you go out on a stroll bring a bag with you to pick up a few pieces!

     OUR MISSION

To provide a platform for environmental awareness and action, specifically marine litter. We are turning awareness into action by cleaning up the beaches, advocating for more sustainability practices globally, and performing research projects on the impacts of marine litter to the wildlife and ecosystem.

Educational outreach is an integral part of the mission of MCB and we achieve this through public outreach at a local, regional, and international level utilizing workshops, seminars, symposia, and other educational platforms all the way from school settings to social media!
